How Vaccines Work in Pets and Why Your Pet Needs Them

Similar to how vaccines work in humans, dog and cat vaccinations are used to stimulate the immune system so that it's properly equipped to fight off infectious diseases. Both indoor and outdoor pets are susceptible to serious illness and disease. Pets that spend time at a daycare or boarding facility may also come into contact with other animals that have a contagious illness. These diseases can greatly impact your pet's health and might cause premature death in some cases. Additionally, your pet could spread a contagious disease to other animals and even humans.

What “Core Vaccines” Means

When a veterinarian refers to "core vaccines" while discussing cat and dog vaccinations, he or she are likely talking about a group of vaccines that provide protection against extremely dangerous, contagious diseases. CVH believes all dogs are at risk for Lyme and Leptospirosis and consider these to be core vaccines in addition to Distemper and Rabies. By law, both dogs and cats are required to be up to date on Rabies. CVH will not accept patients whose Rabies vaccines are not maintained unless they have a Rabies waiver from the State Veterinarian in place. Rabies titers are not valid in the state of NH. CVH is happy to offer vaccine titers for Distemper and Parvo for dogs and the Upper Respiratory (Distemper) vaccine for cats.

Non-core vaccinations are typically only administered to pets that have a high risk of contracting a certain illness due to factors like lifestyle. A vet on our veterinary team can offer guidance on non-core vaccines your pet may need during your regular wellness exam.

When Pets Should Be Vaccinated

Due to their developing immune systems, puppies and kittens need to be vaccinated. It's recommended that vaccinations begin early to ensure that they are able to receive all of their most needed vaccines before venturing out further into the world. The animal will be put on a regular vaccination schedule afterwards to make sure their protection-- stays up to date.
