Puppy & Kitten Care

Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is fun and exciting for pet owners. However, caring for a young pet takes a lot of work. At Compassion Veterinary Hospital, our team is here to help with the puppy and kitten care services you need to keep your new pet in good health. We have ample experience in caring for puppies and kittens and can offer you valuable counsel, insight, and guidance in meeting your pet’s veterinary care needs.

Physical Exam

Step one to caring for your new kitten or puppy is scheduling a wellness exam with our veterinarians. Wellness exams are an important part of preventive care. A wellness exam consists of inspecting your pet’s eyes, nose, ears, mouth, and skin and listening to its heart and lungs for signs of heart or respiratory problems. We’ll also answer any questions you may have concerning your pet’s diet, behavior, or health. Your young pet will need several wellness exams during its first 8-16 weeks of life to give our vets a chance to monitor its growth and development.

Diagnostic Testing

Diagnostic testing is an important part of kitten and puppy care. Heartworm tests should be done during your puppy’s first year, while kittens need testing for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.

Vaccines

Our puppy and kitten care program includes vaccinations for your pet. Young pets require a series of vaccines to protect them from diseases, as their immune systems are not yet fully developed. Our doctors will schedule these vaccines to concur with your pet’s age, breed, and lifestyle.

Spay and Neuter Procedures

Spay and neuter procedures sterilize your pet to prevent unwanted pregnancies. If you’re not planning on breeding your pet, we recommend these surgeries to reduce the pet population in animal shelters. These procedures also lower your pet’s risk of disease. Dogs and cats can be spayed or neutered at as young as 3 months of age, but our vets will tell you what time is best for your pet.

Microchipping

Microchipping is another service that can be done during your pet’s first wellness exam. Microchips are tiny chips that contain an ID number for your pet that is matched with your contact info on a pet registry. If your pet gets lost, its chip can be scanned to reveal your contact data so it can be returned to you.
