NEW STRAIN OF "KENNEL COUGH"

DEAR PET PARENTS:

THERE HAS BEEN A NEW STRAIN OF KENNEL COUGH IN OUR AREA. EVEN IF YOUR DOG HAS ALREADY HAD THE ORAL VACCINE IN THE PAST YEAR, WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU COME IN FOR A BRAND NEW INTRANASAL BOOSTER TO HELP PROTECT YOUR FUR KIDS!

PLEASE SCHEDULE YOUR NEW INTRANASAL KENNEL COUGH VACCINE. ALL DOGS SHOULD COME IN IMMEDIATELY TO GET THIS NEW UPDATED VACCINE!!!

IT HAS COME TO OUR ATTENTION THAT A VIRULENT STRAIN OF WHAT APPEARS TO BE PARAINFLUENZA VIRUS HAS SPREAD THROUGH SEVERAL BOARDING, DAYCARE, GROOMING, AND DOG PARK LOCATIONS IN AND AROUND NH, INCLUDING OUR OWN COMPASSION VET DAY CARE AND BOARDING.

VACCINATING FOR KENNEL COUGH IS LIKE TRYING TO PROTECT DOGS FROM THE COMMON COLD. THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THAT CAUSE "INFECTIOUS TRACHEOBRONCHITIS". WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO VACCINATE AGAINST A MERE HANDFUL.

BUT, OF COURSE, THAT DOESNT MEAN WE ARE "OK" WITH BREAK THROUGHS OR NEW STRAINS THAT MAKE OUR FUR BABIES SICK!

THE ORAL VACCINE THAT WE HAVE USED TO PROTECT OUR FUR KIDS FROM “KENNEL COUGH” HAS NOT BEEN AS EFFECTIVE TO PROTECT AGAINST THIS PARTICULAR PARAINFLUENZA VIRUS STRAIN.

WE HAVE ORDERED A NEW INTRANASAL VACCINE THAT OFFERS A “BEEFED UP” THREE WAY PROTECTION. THE DOGS MAY NOT LIKE IT “UP THE NOSE” AS WELL AS THE ORAL VACCINE WE HAVE USED FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS, BUT IT WILL GIVE MUCH BETTER COVERAGE AGAINST THE “DOGGIE COMMON COLD”.

IT WILL TAKE ABOUT TWO WEEKS AFTER ADMINISTRATION OF THE NEW VACCINE BEFORE THE DOGS ARE FULLY PROTECTED BY THEIR OWN IMMUNE SYSTEM AFTER RECEIVING THE INTRANASAL VACCINE.

PLEASE COME IN IMMEDIATELY FOR THE NEW VACCINE THAT OFFERS THE BROADEST PROTECTION AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET.

WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED AN EVEN MORE STRINGENT CLEANING PROTOCOL,  AND OF COURSE ARE PREVENTING ANY KNOWN ILL DOGS FROM ATTENDING DAYCARE OR BOARDING.

WHILE NO VACCINATION PROTOCOL IS PERFECT, WE STRIVE TO ALWAYS ADJUST COURSE TO MAKE YOUR PET’S STAY IN DAYCARE AND BOARDING AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE.

IF YOUR PET HAS A COMPROMISED IMMUNE SYSTEM, IT MAY BE BEST FOR THEM TO NOT ATTEND DAYCARE OR BOARDING AT THIS TIME AND TO AVOID DOG PARKS AND PET STORES. EVEN VIRAL KENNEL COUGH CAN RARELY BECOME PNEUMONIA, WHICH IS OF GREATEST CONCERN IN OLDER DOGS OR DOGS WHOSE IMMUNE SYSTEM ARE COMPROMISED.

NO VACCINE PROTECTS AGAINST ALL AGENTS THAT CAUSE INFECTIOUS TRACHEOBRONCHITIS (OR KENNEL COUGH) AS IT IS LIKE TRYING TO PROTECT AGAINST THE COMMON COLD.

BUT IT IS HOPEFUL THIS CHANGE IN VACCINE PROTOCOL WILL HELP GIVE AN ADDITIONAL LAYER OF PROTECTION FOR OUR FUR KIDS.

HOWEVER AS ALWAYS, WE WANT TO DO ALL WE CAN TO PROTECT YOUR FUR BABIES AND KEEP THEM SAFE.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AS WE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO PROVIDE THE SAFEST ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR PETS TO COME AND PLAY.

INTERNAL MEDICINE SPECIALISTS RECOMMEND THAT ANY DOG WHO ATTENDS DOG PARKS, PLAY GROUPS, GROOMING, OR WALKS THROUGH PET STORES SHOULD BE GIVEN KENNEL COUGH AND INFLUENZA VACCINES.

AS ALWAYS I AM HERE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS YOU MAY HAVE.

SINCERELY,

DR. DIANE RICHTER
